The book tells the history of the Hospital of Orbatello, an important Florentine charitable institution whose past is still unknown to most people, and focuses on the artistic treasures held in this ancient facility. Located near San Pier Maggiore, the complex was built in the 14th century by Niccol di Jacopo degli Alberti, one of the richest merchant in Europe. The hospital gave shelter mostly to poor women, lacking the care of relatives. The building underwent several additions and changes during the Medici and Lorena dynasty, and since the end of the 19 th century it has been a section of the University of Florence. Texts by Alessandro Parenti, Cristina De Benedictis, Maddalena Modesti, Isabelle Chabot, Carla Milloschi, Giovanni Leoncini, Esther Diana, Lucia Sandri, Stefano Filipponi, Eleonora Mazzocchi, Guido Tigler, Francesca Maria Bacci, Lorenzo Sbaraglio, Giovanni Giura, Alessandro Grassi, Francesco Pilati, Rita Romanelli.
