21st Century Leadership Now What? : Even Strong Leaders Struggle

Clarence Callaway is viewed by many as a man of integrity, a role model, a man who speaks his peace, a strong self-confident man, a fitness nut, a family man and many other attributes that would, perhaps, make any man proud. However, when asked, he responds with, "I am fundamentally a man who always try to do the right thing". Raised by a strong yet caring father who was also raised by a strong father has set the tone for his life and a mother who even at this point in his life challenges him to continue to succeed. These family influences contributed to Callaway's sense of self pride and self righteousness. Not only does he believe in doing the right thing, he also believes that our purpose on the earth is to be a servant for God. "Being in a leadership position provides you with the perfect opportunity to serve", says Callaway.Callaway's own strong sense of self was built while attending a predominantly white university in the south, during the mid 70s; it was there that he learned all about segregation and the first law of the land, self preservation. "There was absolutely no one to turn to for help." Simply put, at that time your success and survival depended solely on you. This is where he learned to survive on inner strength and the importance of serving others while working as a local community center director.
