Rhodesia, 1967. A young boy is thrown clear of his parents' car as they drive over a landmine and are killed. When Grant wakes up in the local Shava mission, he remembers nothing; however, the 'messages from God' begin as he slowly recovers. He can see the man who planted the mine - but who is he? Mqwayi, the local isanusi (shaman), forms a spiritual bond with Grant, now nicknamed Kiso, in order that he might unravel the mystery. As an orphan and ward of the state, Grant is shuttled between boarding school and different families who care for him in different ways. He learns a lot - particularly about women. His talent for drawing sees him become a successful architect, but the 'messages' still haunt him. Will he ever discover the identity of the man who killed his parents? More importantly, will he avenge them in an increasingly fractured country?
