Horses of the Storm : The Incredible Rescue of Katrina's Horses

On August 29, 2005, the United States suffered one of the worst natural disasters ever when Hurricane Katrina slammed into southern Louisiana and other parts of the Gulf Coast. Various accounts placed the eventual death toll at more than 1,800 and property damage at more than $81 billion. But in the midst of destruction and chaos was born the largest equine rescue ever. "... The unknown is a dangerous thing and can be incredibly fearsome ... One thing was certain - humans were being evacuated and animals were not. So what would happen to the animals? ..." The answer lay in the incredible rescue efforts spearheaded by Louisiana State University's School of Veterinary Medicine and a dedicated team of heroic staff and volunteers.
