J. E. B. Stuart's Raiders : Memoirs of a Black Captain (1987-1989)

Phil attended J.E.B. Stuart High School from 1985 to 1989, where he played on the Raider varsity football team as a defensive back. As a senior, he was co-captain of the team for which he received the distinguished John Avila Leadership and J.E.B. Stuart Raider Ironman Awards, in addition to All-Potomac District and All-Northern Region team honors. Despite his individual achievements, it was the relationships he developed with his teammates on and off of the field that he truly valued. These bonds were forged through two years of adversity in a rapidly changing cultural and socioeconomic climate that forever impacted the school and its football program. He drew upon these experiences as one of J.E.B. Stuart's Raiders, which inspired him to tell this story of irony and perseverance.
