Metastasis is the establishment of a secondary tumour derived from an initial primary tumour at a distant site. Metastatic disease is, by far, the overwhelming cause of death in cancer patients and is therefore one of the most important areas of cancer research. However, due to its complexity, cancer metastasis remains undefeated and accounts for approximately 25 per cent of deaths in the developed world. This first volume provides laboratory methods that cancer researchers can utilize to study cancerous cells and tissues. Protocols also cover how the cells develop and how to separate and analyze these metastatic cells. The intent of these two volumes is to enable cancer and clinical researchers to discover the mechanisms in the complex metastatic process and thus deduct simple ways of predicting metastasis formation that will ultimately lead to novel therapies.
