Herman D.W. Friesen was a spiritual leader of Old Colony Mennonites who helped modernize his community in opposition to traditional religious beliefs. Instead of migrating out of Saskatchewan as many did when the government insisted on public education for children, he stayed and helped shape a new way of life for Mennonites on the prairies.
