Freedom, Dharma, and Rights

Presented at a social philosophy conference held at Gujarat University, Ahmedabad, India in 1991, the papers in this collection discuss basic rights and the corresponding responsibilities of living in social communities. The conference provided opportunites for Western and Indian delegates to address each culture's attitudes. Westerners tend to think primarily in terms of rights, while the moral thinking of Indians tends to commence from the concept of dharma (duty or obligation).
