Geometry and Symmetry

This new book for mathematics and mathematics education majorshelps students gain an appreciation of geometry and its importancein the history and development of mathematics. The material ispresented in three parts. The first is devoted to a rigorousintroduction of Euclidean geometry, the second covers variousnoneuclidean geometries, and the last part delves into symmetry andpolyhedra. Historical contexts accompany each topic. Exercises andactivities are interwoven with the text to enable the students toexplore geometry. Some of the activities take advantage ofgeometric software so students - in particular, future teachers -gain a better understanding of its capabilities. Others explore theconstruction of simple models or use manipulatives allowingstudents to experience the hands-on, creative side of mathematics.While this text contains a rigorous mathematical presentation, keydesign features and activities allow it to be used successfully inmathematics for teachers courses as well.
